Romeo & Juliet Information.png

Thank you for your interest in auditioning for GAPA's Spring 2024 production of Romeo & Juliet! We are taking on our first Shakespearen work as an organization and couldn't be more excited!

We will be doing a modern take on the timeless classic, with our production being set in a high school in Baltimore, Maryland in 1993. Our founder, Allison Lipe, is working on an adaptation that uses modern language with a mix of classic Shakesperean elements.

Students of any age are welcome to audition for this production. We ask that parents please research the themes of this work before deciding if their student should audition. Romeo and Juliet tackles difficult themes like love, death, violence, and suicide. We understand that these themes might be heavy for some. Our goal is to teach these students about these hard topics in a safe environment, where they are free to ask questions and be heard. Unlike any production we have done before, this rehearsal process will be centered around education on the themes of the show, as well as the history of the literature.

Our desire is to not shy away from hard topics, but to handle them with grace, love, forgiveness, and understanding. We do not condone violence of any kind, but feel that it is important to tell these hard stories. Theatre is meant to be a mirror for society - to make people ask the hard questions - and Romeo and Juliet will do just that.
